North East Writers

Background Information

North East Writers

North East Writers is a literature development agency aiming to support, promote and coordinate new writing in Aberdeen and Aberdeenshire, working in partnership with venues, publishers, writers' groups and individual writers based in the region. A major focus of activity is the New Words festival of literature in performance, showcasing local writers and guests from further afield during September, but we work on other events and activities throughout the year.

We were formed in 2006 as Wordfringe, a partnership of literary organisations organising and coordinating a community-based festival showcasing writers and writing in the North-East of Scotland. We presented the first festival in May 2006, and, recognising the need for support for literature, we continued to publicise events throughout the year.

In 2010, the festival was moved from May to September and renamed New Words, and at this point we also adopted the name North East Writers for the year-round literary development work.

The success of the North East Writers model relies on cooperation and collaboration. We will do all we can to support and promote literature in the North-East, and we ask in return that other organisations play their part in the collaborative process.

What we aim to do

We will coordinate and publicise the New Words festival each September, as a showcase for new writing in the North-East. Many of the events in the festival will be organised by partner promoters — publishers, venues, writers' groups, other arts organisations — and marketed under the festival banner.

We will provide and maintain via the North East Writers website a calendar of events of literary interest throughout the year.

We will also provide directories of writers, publishers and writers' groups in the North-East, so that the North East Writers website acts as a central point of call for all information relating to the literary scene in North-East Scotland.

Through the North East Writers Facebook and Twitter feeds we will provide news of literary interest throughout the year.

What we ask other organisations to do

Please help us to keep the information on the website up to date by letting us know of any events you are planning or changes to information in the directories.

Please provide links to the North East Writers website from your own websites and social media feeds so as to enable visitors to access information on the wider literary scene.

Please consider organising events — performances or workshops — in September each year as your contribution to the New Words festival, making sure you agree dates and details with us well in advance so as to avoid clashes.

Please avoid organising literary events during September that are not part of the New Words festival — chances are they would clash with festival events, which would divide potential audiences and help no-one.
